Archicad or Revit template: where production time is actually saved

Workstation displaying a configured project template

Many practices look for BIM productivity in modelling speed. It lies elsewhere: in removing the compliance rework that follows every modelling task.

A well-built template doesn't save a few minutes: it eliminates entire categories of work — graphic rework, recreating views, fixing exports, harmonising between collaborators.

What a template must carry

  • Tool settings and favourites named according to a stable convention
  • Graphic styles, line weights, hatches and section renderings
  • View tree, filters and layer sets by use
  • Schedules and labels ready to produce
  • Classifications and property sets aligned with project requirements
  • IFC export settings and documentation layout settings

Build in the right order

A template is built from data towards drawing, not the other way round. You first fix the information structure (classifications, properties, naming convention), then the objects and their settings, then the graphic expression, and finally the exports.

Starting with the graphics invariably leads to redoing everything as soon as the first data requirement arrives.

The template is a living object

A template that doesn't evolve becomes a brake within two or three projects. It needs an identified owner, an update cycle, versioning and a channel to report gaps found in production.

Without this governance, every team recreates its own local variant and the consistency disappears — exactly the problem the template was meant to solve.

A template doesn't replace the method

The template industrialises rules; it doesn't invent them. It must translate an explicit BIM charter and production habits. Deployed without support, it gets bypassed at the first schedule constraint.

Key takeaways

  • Productivity gains come from removing rework, not modelling speed.
  • A template is built from data towards graphics.
  • Without an owner or versioning, a template degrades within a few projects.
  • A template translates a method: it doesn't replace it.
