The BIM terms we use in our projects and training courses, clearly defined without unnecessary jargon. A shared vocabulary is the first requirement for a successful BIM project.

- AMO BIM
BIM client advisory services: helping the appointing party define intended uses, draft requirements, assess bids and verify the acceptability of digital deliverables.
B
- BCFBIM Collaboration Format
Open format for exchanging comments and correction requests. A BCF carries the camera viewpoint, the relevant object reference and the discussion thread without carrying the model itself: it supports project reviews.
- BIMBuilding Information Modeling
Collaborative working methodology based on digital models containing geometry and data. BIM is not software: it is a process that organises the production, exchange and verification of information throughout the building lifecycle.
- BIM Coordinateur
Discipline lead for BIM: implements the BIM execution plan within their team, prepares deliverables, addresses issues arising from reviews and liaises with the BIM Manager.
- BIM Manager
Person responsible for the BIM framework of a project or organisation: drafting and maintaining the BIM execution plan, structuring the CDE, facilitating reviews, checking deliverables and developing team capabilities.
C
- Cahier des charges BIMCCB / EIR
Statement of the client's requirements: intended uses, data to be delivered, milestones and acceptance criteria. It precedes the BIM execution plan, which describes how the project team will meet these requirements.
- CDECommon Data Environment
Common data environment: a single platform through which deliverables are shared, with statuses, versions and access permissions. It provides the traceability of exchanges required by the BIM execution plan.
- Charte BIM
Internal organisational document describing standing BIM production rules (folder structure, templates, naming conventions and libraries), independently of any specific project.
- Clash detectionDétection d'interférences
Automated identification of clashes and geometric rule violations across disciplines. It produces a list of issues requiring resolution by the relevant design stakeholders.
- Classification
Coding system for built assets and their components (Uniformat, Omniclass, Uniclass or an internal classification system) that enables stakeholders to sort, cost and use model objects consistently.
- Contrôle qualité de maquette
Systematic verification of a deliverable: file integrity, classification, completeness of required properties, units, georeferencing, duplicates and incorrectly typed objects. Performed before integration into the CDE.
- Convention BIMBEP — BIM Execution Plan
Contractual document that defines the BIM uses, roles, levels of detail and information, formats, naming conventions, exchange schedule and checking procedures for a specific project.

- DOE numérique
As-built documentation delivered in a structured format: models reflecting the completed works and associated operational data (identification, location, characteristics and documents).
F
- FamilleRevit family
Parametric Revit object combining geometry, parameters and behavioural rules. Family quality directly determines the reliability of schedules and IFC exports.
- Favoris
Saved tool settings in Archicad (composite structure, layer, dimensioning and materials). When structured and named according to a consistent naming convention, they ensure graphical consistency across an entire team.
G
- GDLGeometric Description Language
Archicad scripting language used to create parametric objects. It enables users to go beyond standard libraries while retaining control over the properties exported to IFC.
- Géoréférencement
Positioning the model within a project coordinate system (base point, survey point, elevation and true north rotation). Failure to use shared georeferencing is the leading cause of misalignment in federated models.
I
- IDSInformation Delivery Specification
buildingSMART standard for expressing information requirements in a machine-readable form. It enables automated quality checks: requirements set out in the BIM execution plan become verifiable.
- IFCIndustry Foundation Classes
Standardised open exchange format (ISO 16739) describing building objects, their properties and their relationships. Versions used in production include IFC2x3, IFC4 and IFC4.3 (infrastructure).
- IFC Translator
Set of IFC export/import settings in Archicad: type conversion, property mapping and element filtering. Using a dedicated translator for each use case avoids arbitrary model exports.
J
- Jumeau numérique
Digital representation of an existing built asset, fed by operational data. It requires reliable digital as-built documentation and an established data governance framework.
L
- LOD / LOILevel of Detail / Level of Information
Levels of geometric development (LOD) and information development (LOI) expected for an object at a given milestone. Distinguishing between the two avoids detailed modelling of objects for which only the data matters.
- LOINLevel of Information Need
Concept introduced by EN 17412-1: the level of information need is defined by the intended use rather than by a catalogue of fixed levels. It is gradually replacing the use of LOD alone.
M
- Maquette fédérée
Assembly of models from multiple disciplines for analysis, without merging the source files. It is used for reviews, consistency checks and clash detection.
N
- Nomenclature
Schedule extracted from the model (quantities, areas and characteristics) and, by extension, a naming convention for files and objects. In both cases, reliability depends on the template configuration.
O
- OpenBIM
Approach to BIM based on open formats and standards (IFC, BCF, IDS) rather than a vendor's native formats. It ensures that each stakeholder can retain their own tools while exchanging readable data that remains usable over time.
P
- PSetProperty Set
Set of properties attached to an IFC object. Standardised PSet (Pset_WallCommon, etc.) coexist with project-specific custom PSet, which must be declared in the BIM execution plan.
S
- Scan to BIM
Production of a model from a survey (a point cloud generated by laser scanning or photogrammetry). Modelling tolerance and intended uses must be defined before the survey.
- Simplebim
Tool for editing and preparing IFC models: filtering, enrichment, property restructuring and production of use-specific deliverables, without returning to the authoring software.
- Solibri
Model quality checking and coordination solution: rule sets, requirements verification, reviews and issue communication via BCF.
- Synthèse
Design coordination service that ensures compatibility between the works of all disciplines. BIM is a tool for this process, not a substitute: coordination remains the responsibility of the design consultants.
T
- TemplateGabarit de projet
Preconfigured starting file (styles, scales, schedules, filters, views, exports and classifications) that standardises and streamlines production. A well-designed template eliminates most repetitive compliance tasks.
